Canyon Park Recovery Update

The City has been working hard to complete the needed repairs and enhancements at Canyon Park. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through the repairs. We know you love Canyon Park, as we all do too! We are eager to open the Park as soon as possible. We promise!

Over the last two years, the City has invested significant time and effort not only to protect the Park from damaging mud and debris flows, but designing and engineering the needed improvements. The scope of work will include roadway and parking lot improvements throughout the park, utility upgrades for the water and sewer system, Ranger Station Kiosk enhancements, added educational and recreational spaces, and general repairs throughout the park.  We are pleased to report that staff plans to request City Council award a construction contract to begin the improvements on Tuesday, March 19. Once the contractor has mobilized, construction is expected to take approximately 9 months.

The great news is that the work completed thus far has been effective! During the significant rain event at the end of January 2024, the City received over 10” of rain in a 48 hour period, crushing rain fall records. However, even though this rain event was very momentous, Canyon Park was not affected. The streams carried the water without obstructions. The culverts were open can clear. And there was no reportable damage in the Park.

Canyon Park 2024

 2023 - Canyon Park Closed

The latest storms created emergency conditions across the state and included local, state, and federal disaster proclamations. The storms caused additional damage to areas that clearly present dangerous conditions. For example, there are new washouts of the roadway near culvert crossing #2. There are several large drops adjacent to the road, walkways, and trail. LA County Public Works is also conducting major hauling operations within their debris basin, so Canyon Boulevard has heavy truck traffic. This activity presents another concern, which places walkers and pedestrians along the park entrance during increased hauling activities. We look forward in seeing you all once the park is safely to reopen.
