Additional containers are provided for a small monthly charge; inquire for current rates). Residents who live in areas highly impacted by wildlife may also request a green bear lock bin by contacting Athens Services at (888) 336-6100.
The following items may be placed in your Green Barrel:
- Food Scraps
- Food-Soiled Paper
- Grass Clippings
- Leaves
- Brush
- Branches
- Tree Trimmings
- Other organic material less than 3 inches in diameter or 3 feet in length generated from landscapes or gardens.
NO Palm fronds, yucca leaves, bamboo, rocks, dirt or trash in green barrels. If found, barrels will be tagged and not picked up until the contamination is removed.
Minimize Trash - Save Money, Help the Environment!
Only the following items should be placed in the black 30-, 60- or 90-gallon trash container: non-recyclable garbage, bathroom waste, candy bar wrappers, ceramics/porcelain, chip bags, cigarette butts, diapers, disposable gloves, foam to-go containers, pet wastes, palm fronds, yucca leaves, and kitty litter. The following items may NOT be placed in the trash container: rocks, soil, construction and demolition debris, liquid waste (cooking oil and grease), household hazardous waste, CFL's or fluorescent light bulbs, electronic waste (VCR's, cell phones, computers, microwaves, etc.), household and automobile batteries, and medical wastes (sharps, needles, and lancets).
Consider this...if you recycle, you not only help the environment, but you can also save money by downsizing from a 90 gallon container to a less expensive 30- or 60-gallon container. Going to the smaller 30- to 60-gallon container can save you money!
Bear Resistant Trash Barrels
Bear resistant barrels are available from Athens Services for residents who wish to prevent trash barrel from being broken into by bears. Residents who subscribe to this service will be provided one (1) black or green 90-gallon bear resistant barrel in lieu of a traditional trash barrel. Prior to barrel delivery, enrollees will be required to sign a 36 month program participation agreement form with Athens Services. Additionally, there will be a monthly fee for 36 months, per barrel. This rate is in addition to the monthly service rate. Barrels will remain the property of Athens Services at all times.
In order for the barrels to receive automated service, the lid must be unlocked by the customer prior to service. Setting unlocked barrels out the morning of collection rather than the night prior will help to reduce the number of trash barrels from being broken into by bears. Athens Services does provide an unlocking service for an additional fee.
For additional information on the Bear Resistant Barrel program or a copy of the 36-month program participation agreement form please visit Athens Services website or call 1-888-336-6100.
Applications can be submitted to the Public Works Department at pwcomments@ci.monrovia.ca.us

Commercial Customers (Non Old Town)
Our current solid waste service agreement with Athens Services takes into account annual mandated State of California minimum wage increases, along with Consumer Price Index related cost impacts effective July 1, 2017.
This means that the monthly cost for the typical 3-yard bin that requires pick-up once per week is $231.53 / month.
For comparative purposes, costs for the same level of service from around the region are as follows:
-
Sierra Madre $362.95 Covina $344.83 Glendora $253.75 Monrovia $231.53 San Gabriel $396.55 South Pasadena $329.75
As the above cost overview illustrates, even with the new organics program implemented, Monrovia still has one of the lower commercial trash service costs in the area.
