What does SB 1383 mean for me?

The City and Athens Services, your exclusive franchise hauler, implemented Monrovia’s Organic Waste Recycling Program, which means residents can now place all organic waste into their current green bin. Food and yard waste that is collected in your green bin will be diverted from landfills and recycled to produce compost, mulch and clean energy.

How to Participate:

Ensure your property has a three bin collection service. One green bin for organic waste, one black bin for landfill and one blue bin for recycling.
Begin placing all organic waste into the green bin.
Place your green bin at the curb each week for collection.

PLEASE NOTE:

If you live in a community with active wildlife and currently use a black trash bear bin, place edible food in your green bin if you feel comfortable doing so.

To minimize impacts from and to wildlife:

Place your organic waste in a clear bag and then place the bag into your green bin
Freeze your organic waste until collection day and then place your organic waste in your green bin

Choose to Compost!

In addition to curbside organic recycling collection, all residents can increase their diversion of organic waste from landfills by turning their kitchen scraps and yard waste trimmings into compost by having their own at-home backyard composting bin.

What is Compost?

Organics account for more than a third of the materials in California’s landfills. As organics decompose, they create greenhouse gases that contribute to global climate change. By helping reduce these materials from ending up in the landfill, you can do your part to help the world be a better place! Composting is a great first step!

Composting is the nature's way of recycling. It is a controlled, natural decomposition of organic matter into a nutrient-rich soil that improves the health and efficiency of garden's from the ground up. Composting can be done almost anywhere: in your backyard, school, work and even your apartment!

A compost bin can help keep your compost pile neat and tidy. You can purchase backyard composting bins and compost your materials yourself or you can purchase countertop compost bins which will help you divert food scraps and other organic waste from going into your trash bin. The small bin can collect materials to later be disposed of in your backyard compost bin or your green bin for removal by Athens.
