What does SB 1383 mean for my business?

All businesses in the City of Monrovia are required to separate and recycle their organic waste. Businesses can comply with SB 1383 by subscribing to organic waste service.

We are currently educating and taking the time to notify businesses on how SB 1383 will impact their operations. Periodically check back to our website or the City Manager's Update for the latest information and next steps!

SB 1383 Requirements for Businesses:

  • Subscribe to organic waste collection service
  • Ensure employees, contractors, customers, and tenants have adequate access to recycling and organic waste containers.
  • Provide organic waste and recycling containers next to each trash container (except restrooms) for customers to use. If a trash bin is in an area that does not generate any recycling or organic waste, then the respective containers are not necessary.
    • Example: Employee breakrooms will require a recycling, organic waste, and trash container all placed next to each other. However, a lobby room or waiting area that has a trash container will not need a recycling and organic waste container if the business doesn’t serve or allow food and drink.
  • Provide containers with proper labels or containers that meet color requirements. Note: It is not required to replace existing containers if they are still functional. However, any new containers purchased on or after January 1, 2022 must have correct colors or labeling.
    • Trash containers must be black or grey, recycling containers must be blue, and organic waste containers must be green

      OR

    • All containers must be clearly labeled and show acceptable and unacceptable items for the container
  • Annually educate employees and tenants on properly sorting waste, recycling, and organic waste into correct bins
  • Provide new tenants with information before or within 14 days of move-in
