The Annual MAP Neighborhood Conference is our biggest event of the year, boasting 350+ attendees and growing every year!
The MAP Neighborhood Conference’s goal is to provide the entire community, including the surrounding areas of Monrovia, an opportunity to gain education, information, training, resources, and build relationships with individuals and groups from all different walks of life. In return, we want everyone in attendance to take what they have learned and share it within their community, their work, their neighborhoods, or anywhere it might be needed.
If you are the type of person who loves to gain knowledge about interesting topics, learn about current trends in the community, meet new people, and want to gain motivation to get involved in your community; then mark your calendars to attend.

MAP’s kick-off party in 2009 held at Julian Fisher Park was the start of our MAP Block Parties. The goal of those block parties was to bring neighbors out to meet with each other, city officials and local organizations. Simply put, they were meant to create a sense of community. The MAP team hosted many such block parties with an increased focus in those neighborhoods that were feeling disengaged from the community. The block parties served to remind not just one neighborhood or street, but the entire community that we're all in this together. Together building a premier community.
So, what better way to remind folks of this than by throwing an old fashioned block party at Julian Fisher Park. There will be free food, music, games, information booths, raffles, and most importantly a chance to celebrate this amazing community that we enjoy today.
Block Parties are created to foster relationships among residents, strengthen the community, and enhance city services. Activities include food, music, games, raffles, and giveaways. City staff is on hand to update participants on current programs and listen to concerns and suggestions.
A new component to MAP’s Block Parties is the unveiling of the Neighborhood Treasures Program. Neighborhood Treasures is an innovative approach to showcase Monrovia’s unsung heroes through art and education. Local artists will create artwork that honors the chosen “treasures” and the adjacent interpretative signage will share the outstanding accomplishments of these fine Monrovians.

MAP-edu Community Meetings, previously known as MAP Ed Quarterly Meetings, were initially created as a quarterly meeting for MAP Leaders to stay connected and active upon graduating from our MAP Adult and Youth Leadership Academies.
Today, MAP Leader or not, we encourage everyone in the community to attend! Simply because every community meeting is focused on current trends and topics relevant to what Monrovia or the world is experiencing. In addition to the various topics, we invite special guest speakers to come speak and provide information and resources based on the topic. Topics include, but are not limited to, information regarding the Monrovia Area Partnership, Police Department, Fire Department, Development Highlights, City Manager Updates, and more! If you feel like there is a topic you’d like to hear about, submit your suggestion to map@ci.monrovia.ca.us.
If you like to stay informed on the current trends, voice your thoughts, ask questions, and love to network, then this event is for you!
MAP-Edu Community Meetings
MAP is all about educating the community...to do that, we need YOU!
MAP Educational workshops are offered to keep the community educated on current community events and to highlight opportunities for involvement. The public is welcome to attend these workshops to become better informed and to spend time with community partners and neighbors.
In addition to our scheduled programs, MAP creates events and programs during the year in response to new developments in our community.

The MAP Adult Leadership Academy began in 2009 as a way to get residents in Monrovia an educational opportunity to learn about how local government operates, how to be a leader in your neighborhood, and how to stay active in the community through building valuable relationships with other members in the community. You can be a resident, business owner, or even someone from another City wanting to learn about different ways to incorporate ideas into your community, it does not matter because we invite everyone to come out and be a part of our Monrovia Area Partnership Team!
After the 7 weeks of learning and building relationships, a graduation will be held in front of City Council to honor your accomplishment of officially becoming a MAP Leader. What does it mean to be a MAP Leader? It means that you are a key component and value to our community because your responsibility is to help keep other members of the community informed of what is happening in town and to provide resources or simply answer a question, This is a great opportunity to practice your inner leader and lead by example for those in your neighborhood, your community, your work, EVERYWHERE!
MAP Adult Leadership Academy
The Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) is a program that was formed in 2006 that builds a strong community by creating a network of strong individuals. Through education, training, networking and activism, Monrovia Area Partners work together to make Monrovia a fun, safe and vibrant place to live. MAP hosts workshops & events to train and guide community members who are ready to be community leaders.
The MAP Adult Leadership Academy was formed to educate our residents about City Government and how it functions, to provide leadership skills and resources to assist them in becoming connected and active in the community. To be part of positive solutions. This academy is held annually and provides graduates with a solid foundation of knowledge to jump-start their work in the community. Many MAP graduates (MAP Neighborhood Leaders) have and/or are currently serving in the community in various roles in their neighborhoods, in various organizations, on boards and commission and City Council. Today, our MAP Adult Leadership Academy boasts over 250+ graduated adult leaders and you can be one of those - join us in the positive change!

Why was the Adult Leadership Academy created?
The MAP Adult Leadership Academy was created to foster a greater partnership with residents and empower activists to get more involved with the City of Monrovia and their own neighborhoods. We strive to provide information and insight for residents to become informed, effective, and inspired community and municipal leaders.
Who can participate in the program?
The MAP Adult Leadership Academy is open to all community members with priority given to Monrovia residents. Participants must be at least 18 years of age. Individuals who are actively involved in a neighborhood block watch, community groups, or business associations are encouraged to apply.
How will participants be selected?
Up to 25 participants can register to attend the MAP Adult Leadership Academy.
After I register, how can I join the Zoom meeting?
Once you have registered on Zoom, you will receive a confirmation email from Zoom with a link and directions on how to join the meetings. If you haven’t received the Zoom link by the first class on September 9, please contact the MAP Team by emailing map@ci.monrovia.ca.us or call (626) 932-5525.
What do I do after I complete the Adult Leadership Academy and graduate?
Once you have completed the Academy, you will be a recognized member of the Monrovia Area Partnership as a MAP Leader. All MAP Leaders are invited to attend ongoing MAP events; MAP-edu Community Meetings, Block Parties, Annual Neighborhood Conferences, and more! When subscribed to our email list, we keep you informed of any leadership and volunteer opportunities that become available in and around the community.
We encourage you to stay involved by attending workshops, meetings, keeping open lines of communication with staff and other MAP Leaders. We each have different skills and interests and so everyone’s role in the community looks different. When we stand as a team to encourage each other, enlighten each other and work with each other, we are able to accomplish more than we ever could alone.

When applications become available for the Leadership Academy, residents will be notified via the city website, city manager’s report and other city publications. Join the 185 youth and adults who have participated in the MAP Youth Leadership Academy and are making a difference in our community!

The MAP Youth Leadership Academy came shortly after the Adult Leadership Academy in 2011. The difference between the Adult and Youth Leadership Academy is not just the day, but the topics, classes, activities, and assignments are all geared towards youth aging from 11-18.
Completing the 7-week Youth Leadership Academy prepares and equips youth with the necessary skill set that they can use in and outside of school. We offer classes practicing self-care, preparing for job interviews, how local government operates, the importance of volunteering, and resume building.

The MAP Youth Leadership Academy is an opportunity for those in grades 6-12 gain education, skills, and resources that will help prepare them for the outside world and to be a leader in that world. The first step towards being an exceptional leader is by taking advantage of opportunities like this to learn different ways to be a better version of yourself. A version that can reflect unto others and make a positive impact throughout the community and world! This free opportunity is held annually from September to October for eight consecutive Wednesdays and gives youth a chance to get out of their shells; practice public speaking, learn about their local government, how to be a leader, the importance of volunteering, building their resumes, practicing mock interviews, and what to expect upon High School graduation. MAP Youth Leadership Academy graduates become MAP Leaders - key component of our Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) program. We consider ourselves a family, so join us on this wonderful journey in becoming the best leader you can be!

Why was the Youth Leadership Academy created?
The MAP Youth Leadership Academy was created to provide similar leadership training as our very successful MAP Adult Leadership Academy, but designed specifically for our youth. The MAP Youth Leadership Academy was formed in 2011 to help youth learn, develop, and grow so they, in turn can take active roles in the health of their community. Today, our MAP Youth Leadership Academy boasts over 150+ graduated youth leaders and who are now a part of positive solutions that they use both inside and outside of the classroom.

Neighborhood Treasure Block Party Unveiling
What is the Neighborhood Treasure Program?
Neighborhood Treasures celebrates historically significant Monrovians through the installation of public art pieces in various neighborhoods throughout the community. The Neighborhood Treasures program includes specialized art work that visually represents the life and contributions of the honoree(s) a plaque with information regarding the honoree(s), and is installed at a location that is significant to the honoree(s). The goal of the program is to enrich the lives of those who view the art and improve neighborhoods by its presence.
Neighborhood Treasures was development by the Monrovia Area Partnership staff, its leaders, Art in Public Places Committee, local artists, and approved by the City Council in 2018.
Where did the idea of the Neighborhood Treasures Program come from?
The Neighborhood Services Division seeks ongoing educational and training opportunities to gain ideas that can be implemented here in Monrovia to increase community engagement.
Every year, staff attends Neighborhoods, USA (NUSA), where our team learns about what other cities within the United States is doing to positively impact their communities. At the 2017 NUSA, the Neighborhood Services staff attended a workshop where another city presented info on their program that honored historic locations and people with small similar monuments that included a plaque with historical information. Neighborhood Services staff thought, what a great idea! But, how can we do something similar in Monrovia?
How did the idea turn into a reality?
The strength of the Monrovia Area Partnership (MAP) program (as the name denotes) is our community partners. Through collaboration with MAP Leaders, Art in Public Places Committee, Local Artists, and City staff, this unique and impactful program came to fruition in 2018. We are now thankful to have celebrated the installation and unveiling five Neighborhood Treasures and are expected to celebrate two more in 2020!
How do we celebrate the Neighborhood Treasure honoree(s)?
In addition to unveiling the Neighborhood Treasure art piece, per MAP fashion, we celebrate the honoree(s) by including a block party celebration! Not only does the community get to see a display of beautiful art to celebrate the unsung hero(s), but also to celebrate that individual/group and the significant impact they made in the community through education, history, food, music, and bringing everyone together!

JOIN US for the 8th Annual MAP Neighborhood Conference!
Last year, over 350 people had the opportunity to learn and engage in community building by attending workshops, meeting neighbors and learning about Monrovia. This year's 8th Annual MAP Neighborhood Conference is building up to be even better. This year's conference will give participants more insight as to the inner workings of City departments, and how they can become more involved in their community.
As you go through the registration process, you will notice that our theme of Building Better... is carried throughout the whole Conference. So where did we get this theme? This theme started as a conversation on building better neighborhoods. Our thought is, that’s what we want, for more people to join us in MAP and join us in continuing to build better neighborhoods. So how do we do that? How do Monrovia residents do that? Each workshop has been carefully thought out as a building block of building better. Building better homes, building a better response to homelessness, building better mental health awareness, building on our history, etc. all of these workshops build on the idea that we are better together and each of our experiences helps us to build better together. So keep that in mind as you go through your day, how can you help in building better?
